Succulent Planter

My husband is obsessed with plants, so for our anniversary this year I decided to re-purpose an old wooden tool box to make a planter for some succulents. You can find these old tool boxes all over the place; antique or junk shops and even online; we found ours on the side of the road. It was super easy to turn this wooden box that had been sitting in our garage forever into something beautiful. It turned out to be a big hit with the husband and is now the centerpiece of his indoor plant collection.

  • Step One: Clean and sand tool box.

I cleaned the tool box, let it dry, sanded it with a relatively fine grit sandpaper and then cleaned it again.

  • Step Two: Oil Planter

Using the same oil we use for our cutting boards I liberally coated and rubbed the oil into the wood. This really improved the appearance of the planter and made it look like new!

  • Step Three: Add pebbles or rocks for drainage.

  • Step Four: Add soil and plant your succulents!

A planter like this can be used either indoors or outdoors. To have your succulents live outdoors they must be slowly hardened and acclimated to direct sunlight over the course of two weeks. If a wooden planted like this is to live indoors it does require a tray for draining; we used some left-over metal flashing which works perfectly!
