Painted Pinecone Holiday Decoration

This one isn’t a kid-craft per-say, but that does not mean that I did not take advantage of toddler labor in the making of these festive decorations. After a family hike, during which many pine cones were collected by the little one, we had a really fun time painting our finds with silver and gold paint. The result were rustic, elegant holiday decorations that we will be able to enjoy all season long!

Step One:

Gather your supplies. We don’t have any pinecones in our backyard so we had to go the woods for these. The only other supplies we needed were;

  • white vinegar

  • dish soap

  • gold and silver acrylic paint

  • paintbrushes

Step Two:

Clean your pinecones. Fill a large bowl with soap, vinegar and warm water. Soak the pinecones for about half an hour, this should ensure that there are no little creatures living in the pinecones and that the sap gets cleaned off. Dry pinecones, either in a very low temperature oven or leave out in a warm, dry spot for at least 24 hours.

Step Three:

Paint! Gather paint, brushes, water for cleaning and newspaper to prevent getting paint on the table. Make sure to get an even coat of paint on the scales, then let dry thoroughly before arranging.
